Physiotherapy
What Is a Physiotherapist?
A physiotherapist is a member of the health care profession. Present guidelines require the Physiotherapist to complete an undergraduate degree and a two year Masters degree. Educated in anatomy, physiology, physical function, disease and injury, the Physiotherapist is trained to treat people of all ages who have musculoskeletal, respiratory and neurological conditions. Physiotherapists keep their skills and knowledge current by taking post-graduate courses and often focus in a specific area (orthopaedics, sports physiotherapy, arthritis care, etc.).
What Are the Goals of Physiotherapy?
The goals of physiotherapy are to improve mobility and strength, to relieve pain and to restore physical function. This enables you to resume your regular activities of daily living including work, school, recreational activities, home-making and/or self-care. If the injury or disease is severe in nature, the goal is to assist you in returning to your maximal function.
What Will the Physiotherapist Do?
The Physiotherapist will do an in-depth assessment which consists of a subjective interview (asking relevant questions about your pain and/or injury and how it affects you) as well as an objective assessment (examining your posture, mobility, strength and performing tests that relate to your problem). This will determine the structure or structures that are affected. The Physiotherapist will then develop a treatment plan unique to your needs. For example, although two people may have a rotator cuff injury, their treatments may be very different.
Treatment may include manual therapy (hands on treatment), electrical modalities (ultrasound, laser, etc.), exercises (for strengthening, posture, mobility), education (how to improve your condition and prevent re-occurrence) and/or a home program of self-management. Physiotherapists also often use acupuncture if they are trained to do so.
