Certified McKenzie Practitioners

The McKenzie MethodThe McKenzie Method is an approach to the assessment and treatment of back and neck pain as well as extremity problems. The approach is also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) and is used worldwide by practitioners and patients.

The McKenzie Approach continues to be the most researched physical therapy based method available. A Certified McKenzie Practitioner has the ability to identify the cause of pain based on distinct patterns of pain response during the assessment. All of the Physiotherapists at Pro Motion Physiotherapy are trained in this method. In addition, we are proud that four Physiotherapists have also completed the education and exam process to become Certified McKenzie practitioners: Joanna Lau; Jo‑Ann Morson Genise; Harold Marefatpour; Tony Vu.

The McKenzie MethodThe assessment will involve a thorough history taking and a series of repeated movement testing that will provide the practitioner with a pattern of pain response. The most common pain response involves centralization of pain although there are others that can be identified. The treatment approach involves a patient’s own movements to reduce pain and restore function. The movements and forces used are based on the patient’s pain response during the assessment. If a pain response pattern cannot be identified, the patient may not be suitable for mechanical therapy and the practitioner may recommend alternate treatment or further medical investigation. The ultimate goal of mechanical treatment is to reduce/abolish pain and put the patient in control of their symptoms and learn how to prevent recurrences of symptoms.
