Core Stabilization Exercises

Core stability exercises are commonly provided for people who have sustained an injury and are especially important for people who are recovering from back pain. The "core" consists of different muscles that run the length of the torso.

These exercises are important as they strengthen the muscles that are located deep in the trunk and therefore provide stability to the spine, pelvis and shoulders. Core stability exercises assist by strengthening the muscles in order to avoid unwanted movement that may be harmful and cause pain.

There are many exercises that will strengthen the core muscles and there is equipment that can also be used (i.e. balls, balance boards, dumb-bells etc). It is important that you see someone who is trained in this approach to ensure that you are doing the correct exercise the correct way. It you have an injury or underlying condition then the exercises may need to be adapted to suit your specific needs.
